Self Learner Studies: A Study in Humility
Self Learner Studies: A Study in Humility was written for my high school sons to use as part of their homeschool curriculum. It was inspired by Micah 6:8, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” This study guide is designed to be used in conjunction with a number of other resources, as follows:
A Study in Justice and A Study in Kindness & Mercy - This study is designed to follow A Study in Justice, then A Study in Kindness & Mercy, so the review verses and some of the assignments are based on the understanding that the student has previously completed those studies.
ESV Bible – The student will read through the books of Ecclesiastes and 1 Peter and answer specific questions that are based on the ESV translation. Other translations may be used, but the wording may be different. Each week’s studies will also include a passage of Scripture to memorize:
Week One – Matthew 5:1-3
Week Two – Matthew 5:4-6
Week Three – Matthew 5:7-9
Week Four – Matthew 5:10-12
No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green (https://amzn.to/3b6XLVN) by Melody Green – The student will read one chapter as part of each lesson and answer questions related to content, personal insight, and practical application.
Dictionaries – The student should have access to http://dictionary.com and Webster’s 1828 Dictionary (http://webstersdictionary1828.com/).
Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance (https://www.biblestudytools.com/concordances/strongs-exhaustive-concordance/) – The student will utilize this concordance to look up uses of the given term in the Bible and gain a deeper understanding of its meaning in the biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek.
Writing Resources – The principles given in the writing portions of the study are derived from IEW’s Teaching Writing: Structure and Style (https://iew.com/shop/products/teaching-writing-structure-and-style%C2%AE-second-edition-seminar-workbook-premium) curriculum and Circe Institute’s The Lost Tools of Writing (https://www.circeinstitute.org/lost-tools-writing) curriculum. These are both fabulous tools for learning/teaching effective writing skills, but are not necessary for this study. Some of the writing terminology is derived from these approaches, but the writing portion may be adapted to correspond to any writing curriculum or approach.
A Study in Humility may be used for individual study or utilized in a group environment. Students are encouraged to work through each day’s guide on their own during the week, then meet together with others to share what has been learned and discovered.
I hope that completing A Study in Humility brings you a new awareness of the brevity of life as you read the pages of Scripture and that the life of Keith Green inspires you to live whole-heartedly for the glory of God!
